What type of interpreting?

flowchart

Please note that deaf people and people who are hard-of-hearing will need a face-to-face interpreter or a lipspeaker.

The decision upon the use of an interpreter should be sensitive to the actual situation and best practice. As a basic principle, the more complex the communication, the more likely the need for face-to-face interpreting.

If you respond yes to any of these questions, book a face-to-face interpreter:

  • Is the interview likely to be long?
  • Is the communication going to be complex?
  • Is the patient vulnerable?
  • Are you going to disclose very sensitive information?
  • Are you going to break bad news?
